Tips For Flying With Infants
It can be very difficult to fly with an infant and even more so if the flight is a long haul flight. With older children you can keep them entertained with colouring books or in-flight movies, but it can be harder to keep infants occupied.
- If you book well in advance you should be able to get a good seat with a sky cot. It is much easier for parents to relax on the flight if the baby is settled into one of these little bassinettes. Although most airlines will have some sky cots, they are something that will be in big demand especially if you are going on a very popular flight.
- It is a good idea to take your child’s favourite blanket and toys with you. An infant will be comforted by familiarity and this can mean they are relaxed too during the flight.
- It is a good idea to have everything ready for making bottles of feed. As you know, there is not a lot of room on an airplane so it makes sense to have everything to hand instead of having to search for what you need in your hand luggage. It is much easier to manage if things are easy to reach.
- There is only a certain amount of liquid that can be taken onto a plane these days but most airlines will make an exception for breast milk. Make sure you check with the airline before you travel so that you are clear about any restrictions in this regard. If you bring formula the cabin crew should be able to provide hot water as you need it to make up the feeds.
- Make sure that your baby is fed before you get on the plane because it can be a long time before they turn off the fasten seatbelt signs.
- Although you could be tempted to give your infant medication to induce sleep, you could be putting the child in danger so avoid this. You should only ever do this if your doctor instructs you to.
